Spreading drug payments or lowering drug costs?

Similar sounding programs can do different things. One changes when you pay. Another may reduce what you pay if you qualify.

Part D · PrescriptionsAt a glance

The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan spreads covered out of pocket drug costs across the calendar year. It does not reduce the total cost. Extra Help is a separate cost assistance program.

What the payment option does

It is voluntary and offered through Medicare drug coverage. Instead of paying covered out of pocket drug costs at the pharmacy, you receive bills from the plan. Any plan premium continues. There is no participation fee.

What it does not do

It is not a discount and does not replace insurance. Monthly bills can vary. Ask for an illustration using expected prescriptions and your start date. It may be more useful when high drug costs occur early in the year.

If the total cost is the problem

Ask about Extra Help and other assistance rather than assuming payment spreading solves affordability. Eligibility rules apply. Discuss both the amount owed and payment timing with the plan.

Before opting in

Write down pharmacy spending and other monthly commitments. Ask what happens if medicines change, you switch plans, or you leave the payment option. Keep the explanation for reference.
