Tell the plan before the move
Contact your plan with the planned move date and new address. Ask whether it serves the new location and which enrollment opportunity applies. If you notify the plan before a qualifying move, the window generally begins the month before the move and continues for two full months afterward.
Confirm what happens to current coverage
If you move outside your Medicare Advantage plan’s area and do not join another Advantage plan during the applicable window, you return to Original Medicare when the old plan drops you. That does not mean every additional coverage need has been handled. Ask about prescriptions and any supplement separately.
Build a new local care list
Identify the doctors, hospital, pharmacy, and ongoing services you expect to use. Confirm participation in the exact plan under consideration. Ask your current clinicians about transferring records through their secure process. A change of address form alone does not establish a new care team.
Keep the dates together
Write down the last day of old coverage, the first day of new coverage, and any submission deadline. Ask for written confirmation. If the move changes, call again rather than assuming the original timeline still works.
Review a supplement separately
Medigap rules are different from Medicare Advantage enrollment rules. Ask your insurer and state insurance department how the move affects your policy and any buying protections. Do not cancel a policy while those answers are still uncertain.
