When can I buy Medigap?

Your timing can protect your choices.

The short answer

Your federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months, starting the first month you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. It is different from the annual fall enrollment period.

A little more detail

What does this window protect?

During this period, an insurer cannot deny a Medigap policy it sells because of your health. Outside it, medical underwriting may apply unless you have a protected right.

Does October enrollment reopen Medigap?

No. The October 15–December 7 Medicare Open Enrollment Period is not a yearly guaranteed opportunity to buy Medigap. Check Medigap eligibility before leaving Medicare Advantage.

What if my coverage changes?

Certain situations create guaranteed issue rights. State protections may also apply. Keep notices showing when and why coverage ended, and confirm your deadline before making a change.

What if I am under 65?

Access and prices may differ. Ask your state insurance department or SHIP which protections apply to your age and circumstances.
