Will Medicare travel with me?

Check coverage before you pack.

The short answer

Where you travel matters. Original Medicare generally does not cover care outside the United States, with limited exceptions. Check your exact coverage before leaving home.

A little more detail

Traveling within the United States?

With Original Medicare, you can generally use doctors and hospitals that take Medicare. With Medicare Advantage, check your plan’s network and rules for routine care away from home.

Going abroad?

Some Medigap policies include limited foreign travel emergency coverage. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer emergency or urgently needed care abroad. Do not assume either provides comprehensive international medical coverage.

What should I ask?

Ask about destinations, emergency care, routine visits, deductibles, limits, and how to file a claim. Get the answer from your insurer and save the relevant policy documents.

Is travel insurance the same thing?

Not necessarily. Trip cancellation insurance may not include medical coverage. Read exclusions and limits, including any rules for pre-existing conditions, before buying.
