The parts of Medicare

Four letters.
A clearer picture.

Get to know what each part of Medicare does.

A little clarity. More room for life.

At a glance

Start with these three things.

A + B

Hospital and medical coverage: Original Medicare.

C

Medicare Advantage: a private-plan alternative.

D

Prescription drug coverage.

Your questions, unpacked

The parts of Medicare: your questions, answered.

01Begin with Parts A and B

Part A is hospital insurance. Part B is medical insurance, including many doctors’ services and outpatient services. Together, these are called Original Medicare.

Covered services can still have deductibles, coinsurance, and other costs. Having coverage does not mean every service is paid in full.

02Understand Parts C and D

Part C is another name for Medicare Advantage: coverage offered by private plans approved by Medicare. These plans include Part A and Part B benefits, and most include Part D drug coverage.

Part D covers prescription drugs. You can get it through a separate drug plan or through many Medicare Advantage plans. Check each plan’s drug list and pharmacy costs.

03Know where a Supplement fits

Medicare Supplement Insurance, also called Medigap, works with Original Medicare to help pay certain out-of-pocket costs. It is a different kind of coverage from Medicare Advantage.

A broker can walk you through these routes and explain what you would pay, how you would access care, and what needs a closer look.

04Where Plan G and Plan N fit

Plan G and Plan N are Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies. They are not additional parts of Medicare and are not Medicare Advantage plans.

They help with certain costs under Original Medicare. Modern Medigap policies do not include prescription drug coverage.
