Your questions, unpacked

Late enrollment: your questions, answered.

Part B and prescription coverage differ

Delaying Part B without qualifying circumstances can lead to a late enrollment penalty and a gap in coverage. Prescription drug coverage has a separate set of timing and penalty rules.

For Part D, an extended gap without Medicare drug coverage or other creditable prescription coverage can matter even if you have not been taking medications.

Your earlier coverage matters

Coverage based on current employment may affect Part B enrollment timing. For drug coverage, keep the notices showing whether your previous coverage was creditable.

Gather dates rather than relying on memory: when employment ended, when coverage ended, and when new coverage began.

Confirm your next available step

A Special Enrollment Period may apply in certain circumstances. If you disagree with an official penalty determination, review the notice for the process and deadline to challenge it.

A broker can help you understand the coverage questions. Medicare, Social Security, or the plan can explain the official determination and next steps.
