An HSA and Medicare: line up the dates before contributing
Your application date and coverage start date may not be the same. That difference matters when you have a Health Savings Account.
You cannot make HSA contributions for months covered by Medicare. Retroactive Part A coverage can affect earlier contributions, so confirm your Medicare effective date and HSA limit with Social Security and a tax professional.
Separate contributions from the account balance
The issue is eligibility to add money for a particular month. Do not assume that continuing to work or remaining on an employer health plan makes Medicare covered months eligible for HSA contributions. Include employer contributions in the discussion.
Check for retroactive coverage
When you apply for premium free Part A after 65, coverage can go back up to six months, but not before initial eligibility. That can overlap months when you contributed. Confirm the actual date rather than using your retirement date as a substitute.
Plan before applying
Medicare advises people working past 65 with an HSA to stop contributions in advance because of retroactive coverage. The applicable timing depends on eligibility and the application. Ask Social Security about your expected effective date, then have your tax professional establish the contribution limit.
Coordinate payroll and personal deposits
Ask payroll when employer and employee deposits will stop. Check any separate contributions you make yourself. Keep the confirmation with your Medicare application records. A payroll change alone does not determine whether earlier contributions were allowed.
If money was already contributed
Do not guess at a correction or delay needed coverage without advice. Gather contribution dates and the official Medicare start date. Ask the HSA custodian and tax professional about excess contributions and any required correction. This guide does not calculate your tax position.
