Help at home: what Medicare home health actually means
Recovering at home can bring relief and a new list of questions. Start by separating skilled medical care from help with daily life.
Medicare home health requires qualifying skilled care and homebound status, with care arranged through a Medicare certified agency. It does not cover around the clock help or personal care alone.
Identify the kind of help needed
Write two lists: medical tasks and everyday tasks. A wound dressing and help preparing dinner are different needs. Bring both lists to the care team so a discussion about covered services does not leave practical household needs unaddressed.
Check the eligibility requirements
A provider must assess and order qualifying care. Covered services may include intermittent skilled nursing or therapy. Homebound does not mean someone can never leave home; medical appointments and certain short outings may still be compatible with eligibility. The care team and agency should explain how the rules apply.
Understand what is outside the benefit
Medicare does not pay for 24 hour home care, delivered meals, unrelated housekeeping, or custodial care when that is the only need. Do not assume that a referral for home health includes those services. Ask who can help you explore additional community or private support.
Confirm services and costs before visits begin
Ask for the agency name, visit schedule, ordered services, and contact person. Covered home health services generally have no patient charge under Original Medicare, but medical equipment can have cost sharing. Ask about any service the agency expects you to pay for yourself.
Make the handoff practical
Put the agency phone number and visit schedule somewhere easy to find. Ask what to do if a visit is missed or needs change. For urgent medical concerns, follow your clinician’s instructions rather than waiting for an insurance conversation.
