Can I change my Medicare plan after enrolling?

Yes. Every fall, Oct 15 to Dec 7, anyone can change plans for a January 1 start. Advantage members get a second window, Jan 1 to Mar 31. The one door that can lock: moving from Advantage to a Supplement usually requires health underwriting after your first year.

The Annual Enrollment Period. Switch Advantage plans, change drug plans, move between Original Medicare and Advantage, any direction. New coverage starts January 1.

Advantage members only

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period: one switch to a different Advantage plan, or a move back to Original Medicare, if January reveals the plan is not what you expected.

Life happens

Special Enrollment Periods

Moving to a new county, your plan leaving your area, and several other events open windows any time of year. A 5-star plan in your area can even be joined once per year outside the windows.

Enrollment is not a life sentence. But the Advantage-to-Supplement door has a health check on it after your first year, which is why the first plan choice deserves more care than a mailer and a guess.

The underwriting door, explained

Your first year on a Medicare Advantage plan comes with trial rights: in certain situations, you can return to Original Medicare and buy a Supplement with no health questions. After that, in most states, Supplement insurers can decline you or price by health history.

A few states add extra switching rights, including California’s birthday rule for people who already have a Supplement. If a Supplement is where you think you will want to end up, the safest time to decide is before the first enrollment, not after. The two routes, compared honestly.

My plan is being discontinued. What now? +

You get a Special Enrollment Period, generally through the end of February, and a letter explaining it. Do not ride the automatic reassignment without checking it against your doctors and drugs first.

Do I have to re-enroll every year? +

No, plans auto-renew. But every plan mails an Annual Notice of Change each fall, and the smart move is reading it, or having us read it, before the Oct 15 to Dec 7 window closes.

Can I switch from one Supplement to another? +

Any time of year, though health underwriting usually applies outside protected windows. If your premium has crept up, a quote costs nothing and switching is often easier than people expect.
